As I remember to fix it was pretty straightforward, but since it would have broken *a lot*
of users criteria queries we didn't do it.
It will also break a lot now, but with a 3.5 it might be tolerable....maybe provide a
"legacy criteria mapping option" ? (maybe it is possible to support by custom
dialect type returns ?

the underlying field type is.....
