It really depends on how you define real world size. The package javadocs test output is
based on ~2K text documents. I'm using it with great success for several
implementations where there's just a handfull of terms indexed per document. Street
address in ngrams, latitude and longitude, etc. I think the largest such index of mine
contain 150 000 documents and produce results ~10x faster than a RAMDirectory.
