I investigated and the problem occurs in c3p0 which I use for my connection pooling. I attached a file containing the stack traces (obtained with JConsole) of some of the http processor threads when the system locks up. Using JConsole, I also tried to run softResetAllUsers() on the pooled datasource when the system is locked up and that fixes the issue as well.
