You are correct that this used to work in 1.1.5, but with the following warning:
WARN org.jboss.weld.Bean - WELD-000018 Executing producer field or method [method]
@Produces org.jboss.weld.tests.WeldInjectionStackOverflow.getSevice() on incomplete
declaring bean Managed Bean [class org.jboss.weld.tests.WeldInjectionStackOverflow] with
qualifiers [@Any @Default] due to circular injection
I've tracked the problem down to commit 7488af209b. Since that commit, instances of
dependent beans are no longer kept as incomplete in creationalContext. Aleš will check
whether this is OK or not.

Imo, your use case is wrong.
StackOwf comes from WELD-911 fix.
The real bug is that we don't find this with Weld validation phase.
(although ARQ does some funky stuff, which might evade validation, not sure ...)

Manuel, any special reason why the producer method isn't static?
Since the producer method isn't static, Weld must first create an instance of the
{{WeldInjectionStackOverflow}} bean before invoking the producer method on the instance.
And since the bean also contains the field {{@Inject Service service}}, Weld must inject
an instance of {{Service}} into the field when creating the instance of the bean.
Therefore Weld must call the producer method. But it can't do that until the bean
instance containing the method is set up properly.
But then again, Weld shouldn't fail with StackOverflowError...

actually there is no special reason not using a static producer. at least in this
example.
but in general i think it should work.
in a normal production environment (no arquillian..) this works too - i mean defining
non-static producers in beans, that also inject the produced stuff. so why shouldn't
this work with arquillian?

OK, I've researched this and it should NOT work.
According to the spec, since WeldInjectionStackOverflow (WISO) doesn't declare a
scope, its scope defaults to Dependent. Instances of beans that have a dependent scope are
never shared between multiple injection points. This results in StackOverflowError, since
Weld creates a new instance of WISO before it invokes the producer method. When creating
the new instance of WISO, Weld must inject Service into the service field (of the new
WISO). Thus it needs to invoke the producer method again - which again leads to creating a
new instance of WISO (because WISO is dependent-scoped), and so on.
If you make WISO @ApplicationScoped, the test will pass.
