Two things are often needed when testing JPA code:
-1 Counting rows in a table
-2 Rolling back the transaction after each test (to speed up test execution, while potentially dangerous)
To simplify testing it would be good to have a set of base classes that implement this common functionality. Test class can extend a base class when this kind of functionality is required. The Spring framework has excellent support for this and can be used for inspiration:

I included some example code that I wrote myself to get a feel how difficult it would be to implement. The code uses an embedded container using the EJB 3.1 API, but should off course integrate with Arquillian.
By default each testcase runs in a transaction (using the usertransaction) and is rolled back at the end of the test, unless the testcase is annotated @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttributeType.NOT_SUPPORTED). The rollback behavior can be changed with the custom @RollbackAfterTest anotation.
I would be happy to help implementing this feature.

I am using Arquillian Ajocado + Drone for running functional tests on sample applications. I use various arquillian container plugins including openshift-express. Since an entire sample app is used for the functional tests, I use a deployment method similar to this one:

Tomcat decodes the Authorization HTTP header containing the HTTP BASIC authentication credentials, using the ISO-8859-1 charset. On the contrary, Arquillian uses {{Charset.defaultCharset}} to encode the supplied credentials, before Base64 encoding the resulting byte array. This can result in a 401 error, when accessing the manager application on Tomcat; the failure will occur when the credentials contain characters that are encoded differently in ISO-8859-1 and the default charset of the environment. For example, if the default charset is UTF-8, then credentials containing _ö_ will not be accepted by Tomcat as _ö_ is encoded as 0xC3 0xB6 in UTF-8 and 0xF6 in ISO-8859-1.
The suggested fix is to use ISO-8859-1 in {{CommonTomcatManager.constructHttpBasicAuthHeader()}} as listed:
