We already have an examples folder, so have used that approach in the past. However for
someone just looking to try out the OpenTracing javaagent with a tracing solution, it
seems a big overhead to clone the complete source for the Hawkular APM project, given that
it is not actually necessary/built before using the example.
As the example is using Hawkular APM as a ready built service (via docker), it seems
better if the example repo was small and independent of the Hawkular APM repo.
Maybe a hawkular-apm-examples repo? with a collection of such examples, and similarly
hawkular-services-examples repo?

You should put it under some kind of "examples" folder in your APM repo.
