Why not: private static final InetAddress LOCAL_HOST; static { try { LOCAL_HOST = InetAddress.getLocalHost(); } catch (UnknownHostException e) { throw new ExceptionInInitializerError(e); } } private static InetAddress getLocalHost() throws UnknownHostException { return LOCAL_HOST; } Which is roughly 1000x faster.
