It so happens that the virtualized servers we are using uses NFS to represent their LFS.
After configuration using LFS for the non-shared directories the problem no longer
occurred.
Please feel free to close this issue.
Master/Slave configuration as outlined in Hibernate Search in Action
does not work when shared location is on NFS

There are many .nfs files being generated in slave locations and appear to be still held
open by some part of the application since they fail to be cleaned up.
