Unfortunately that is proving to be quite difficult. I have been working on it nonstop
since your comment. We have a big object model; simply creating two classes with the one
relationship does not reproduce this problem. I tried setting hibernate logging to TRACE
but there does not seem to be any logging around how the decision is made to eagerly load
these properties.

I tried Shareth's suggestion from HHH-5109 here and it's no help in this case. I
actually don't think HHH-5109 is a real bug (the submitter just forgot the
"optional=false"). Obviously I do think that this one is a real bug, though
I'd be happy to be proven wrong :)

Both Owner and Owned are mapped with:
@Proxy(lazy=false)
I don't think it is possible to override this setting using:
@LazyToOne(LazyToOneOption.PROXY)
Please try removing @Proxy(lazy=false) on the child entity class.

queries:

-one that loads Child (the expensive one)
We are using the stock javassist proxies and no bytecode enhancement.

Right on, that does it. I also had to remove the logic in the setter from the HHH-5109
example, because the setter was triggering the Owned class to load.
In googling this I found a significant # of people having similar problems. Tonight
I'll blog a checklist of all the things that have to go right to get a {One|Many}ToOne
lazy. In the meantime it might be worth adding a few trace-level log statements that show
how the determination of lazy-or-not is made; I would have been able to easily figure this
out without hassling you guys.
