I’ll see what I can do about he minimal reproducer. I think you’re analysis is correct, though. The issue only occurs like this when querying multiple indexes at the same time where at least one of them is ok and one fails. When querying just one index (or all queried indexes fail) OS/ES will simply return a status code 400.
