I've got a web application which is well tested (JMeter etc), and suddenly today, 2 of
JBoss threads were stuck on a getResultList(), using 100% of the CPU.

I've got similar problem with web application on tomcat.
Three threads were running for few days using 100% CPU. We tried to reproduce this, but
without luck.

if your CPU's are on 100% and your threads are very often executing in
java.util.HashMap.put(HashMap.java:374)
org.hibernate.engine.StatefulPersistenceContext.addCollection(StatefulPersistenceContext.java:...)
then I see only 2 plausible conclusions:
1. You are loading very big collections.
To check this, please try to log the concerning Query statement, and find out how many
records are returned.
Needless to say that loading very large collections can become CPU instensive.
In such case the relations should be modelled in another way, or alternatively you can
use the EXTRA_LAZY feature.
So please tell us how big (concrete size of loaded collection) your collections are.
2. Your are running into a concurrency problem like reported in JGRP-525.
Such concurrency can only happen, if you are working with concurrent 2 threads on the
same hiberante session.
That's not allowed in Hiberante.

Im not sure that in our case (described by Marcin Lukasiuk), we have a problem with big
collections. The same request sending now is ending in 4 sec. In threads dump we found
StatefulPersistenceContext.collectionsByKey size equals 12 436. It doesn't looks like
problem I guess.
In application log we found, that the same request was sent by the same operator
(JSESSIONID) during couple ms. One of them was ended in 4 sec, but the other was executing
by couple days (stuck in java.util.HashMap.put (HashMap.java:374)), until Tomcat restart.
So it can be concurrency problem, but I have no idea how it can be happen. Each http
request is using single session (managed by
org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.support.OpenSessionInViewInterceptor). I guess that
hibernate doesn't share it between http threads. We can't reproduce this problem
by sending same request twice during 1 second.
Maybe it can be related with ehcache, which we are using as entity, collection and query
cache?
Any other sugestion, becouse I stuck...

This looks very like a concurrency problem.
Probably the second request was also sent within the same http-session before the first
request-round-trip ended,
so this leads to 2 concurrent threads using the same hibernate session.
We also use Tomcat in our company and sometimes (really rare but it happens) a request
arrives twice, I guess due some Re-post
mechanisms in proxies. We have build custom code (using a kind of semaphore) which
prevents the second request from being processed

Yes, the second request was sent with the same jsessionid, but AFAIK it doesn't means
that they are using the same hibernate session. OpenSessionInViewInterceptor is opening
session per request not per http session. Am I right or I missed something?

Im not familiar with Spring but the JavaDoc of OpenSessionInViewInterceptor make me doubt
whether it is really opening a new session per request:

I've got a web application which is well tested (JMeter etc), and suddenly today, 2
of JBoss threads were stuck on a getResultList(), using 100% of the CPU.
