Thanks for the analysis [~dan.berindei].
One way of fixing #3 is probably to enhance that check to also check for the existence of
a class file with a newer timestamp than that generated .java source file that already
passed the content comparison check. This way we can deal with broken intellij and
maven.
Maven compiler plugin 3.8.1 and Protostream seem broken
