John Casey pointed out a preferred solution to avoid moduleSets in favor of dependecySets: introduce a separate maven module (on the same level as the other children) with the only purpose of building the distro. This module would have the other children as dependencies and will contain an assembly definition that uses dependencySets to include the wanted binaries into the distro. Unfortunately this does not satisfy our need to include config files, scripts and data files in the distro, so we cannot apply it.
