I finally realized that it seems the issue isn't directly with the implementation but something with serializing specific data, which is why I was never able to reproduce it. I have tweaked the test and I am finding that for some reason any byte[] that starts with a -84 and -14 first 2 bytes gives this exception. I seem to only be able to reproduce the exception when this data is present.
