This is fine, but it doesn't work in cases where the deriving class already inherits from another type. BeanManagerAware should provide a static accessor: public class BeanManagerAccessor extends BeanManagerAware { public static BeanManager getManager() { return new BeanManagerAccessor().getBeanManager(); } } Something like that, contained within BeanManagerAware, would suffice.
