With Sybase ASE, the naming pattern for schema indexes objects is :
schema..tableName
But the abstract class org.hibernate.dialect.Dialect has the following method signature :

return '.';
}
It should be :
public String getSchemaSeparator() {
return ".";
}
and as such could ne overriden in SybaseDialect as :

I believe that the '..' separator you mention refers to the default schema.
With the connection URL containing the dbname, as in:
hibernate.connection.url jdbc:sybase:Tds:<server>:<port>/<dbname>
I have not tried Sybase ASE 12, but using Sybase ASE 15 with the DB name in the connection
URL, I had no problems setting hibernate.default_schema to any of the following.
hibernate.default_schema dbname.dbo
hibernate.default_schema dbname.
hibernate.default_schema .
Please check to see if any of these will work for you.

I was not refering to the default_schema property but to the schema attribute you can use
in the mapping.
Example : I have one main schema defined as my default_schema (say defaultSchema) but a
few entities I need to map are related to tables from another Sybase schema (say
otherSchema).
in one of my mapping file I will use :
< class name="Client" table="client"
schema="otherSchema" >
../..
wich will generate an sql query like :
select .. from fbi.client
Sybase syntax for schema is not 'fbi.client' but fbi..client (double point).
As a workaround I had to create many SQL views in my defaultScheam for each of theese
tables to have them accessible from within defaultSchema (hopefully theese entities were
readOnly for my application)..

Does "otherSchema" refer to a different database? From the Sybase doc, it looks
like a schema is a grouping of objects (e.g., tables, views) within a database, not a
database itself.
Please try the following:
schema="otherSchema.dbo"
schema="otherSchema."
Putting a '.' after the schema name (as in "otherSchema.") should result
in two dots when the Hibernate constructs the query.
