I'm facing the same "issue". I tried some workarounds using derived properties, but sometimes Hibernate won't create the column at all or just create a normal column... If I don't find a good solution, I'll implement it in my business logic (just doing .toLowerCase before every access or using a second field...), but that's not something I would prefer over a built-in solution. The one to one implementation of 5.3 was definitely flawed. We solved a couple of bugs. One of which where the parent side of the one to one association was actually treated as child. I wouldn’t classify this issue as a bug personally until we have shown that the issue persists after fixing the mapping. That means that the identifier of your child side of the association should be persistable/insertable. Please consider writing a test case based on the Hibernate test case template so we can play around with the model and see what needs to be fixed. I do save PaymentDO before PaymentBatchJob. (see my comment above “What I want to do is saving a PaymentDO and then add a PaymentBatchJobDO to it (using Spring's JpaRepository). Strangely when trying to save the PaymentBatchJobDO this fails.“) The code worked with hibernate-core 5.3.* but no longer with hibernate-core 5.4.*. As you can see Spring is calling EntityManager.merge which leads to this issue. As a workaround I managed now that in that case EntityManager.save gets called. (see test {{testSharedCollectionExceptionAfterLockRefreshAndFlush}} for this specific issue). Note, this seems seems somewhat related to: [HHH-12268] (which still exists in the latest 5.x versions – test also contained in above repository ). However, this issue does not seem to occur in 5.4.15 (only in 5.3.17) while the above issue does occur in both.
