I have tracked down the problem to the following code in BaseSqmToSqlAstConverter.addVersionedAssignment(...) : value = new BinaryArithmeticExpression( versionColumn, ADD, new QueryLiteral<>( 1, versionType ), versionType ); 1 is an Integer whereas versionType.getJdbcMapping() is a LongJavaType, explaining why the assertions fails in the QueryLiteral constructor. The assertion should probably be relaxed to take into account that an int can be promoted to a long. Or alternatively something like in the caller : versionType.getJavaTypeClass() == Long.class ? new QueryLiteral<>( 1L, versionType ) : new QueryLiteral<>( 1, versionType ) The same issue may happen with other primitive types supporting promotion. This is unfortunately because the FK of the {{ToOneAttributeMapping}} uses the root table information for the mapping. We should try to optimize this in {{org.hibernate.metamodel.mapping.internal.MappingModelCreationHelper#interpretToOneKeyDescriptor}} to be able to avoid always joining. You can’t compare an entity expression with e.g. an integer because these types are simply not comparable. In Java, you also can’t write entity == 1 , because how would Java do the comparison? We just apply the same strictness in HQL/Criteria. As unfortunate as this may sound, but you’ll simply have to fix your code. So if I understand it correctly, this was never supposed to work in Hibernate 6 but until 6.2 it worked (magically ) and now it was fixed so that it’s compliant. Sadly, the migration guide ( https://github.com/hibernate/hibernate-orm/blob/6.0/migration-guide.adoc#... ) doesn’t state why it was changed and I also couldn’t find why it was changed when searching after it. Is this documented somewhere, why it was actually changed? I guess, this is because the row does not exist yet in the table, so there is nothing to lock. However, there is also no way for another transaction to access the new entity, so it is already “locked” in a way. Thus, from my perspective, locking a freshly persisted entity should do nothing. I have made a test to reproduce this behavior: https://github.com/mensinda/quarkus-stuff/tree/createAndLock (on the createAndLock branch). Additionally, the createAndLockeclipseLink branch contains the same test with eclipselink. I can confirm that the problem comes from the HV. What’s happening in this case right now is: HV has multiple sources from where it is reading the metadata: annotations, XML, API(programmatic and various ServiceLoaders). Each next source would have higher priority and can be used to override the previous configuration. Now what’s happening in your case: * HV reads XML, which has a reference to your custom constraint, but as that constraint doesn’t have a provided validator either as part of the definition or in the XML – the XML metadata provider “thinks” that there are no validators to be applied to this constraint. * HV “reads” programmatic definitions/ServiceLoadrs – finds a validator for your custom constraint and registers it. At this point, the constraint metadata from XML is not refreshed, and it still assumes that there are no validators. * When you execute the validation for the first time, depending on which route it goes, it will cache the ConstraintValidator for the validated type… If it is going the XML route first – no validators, and you get the exceptions…. If it is an annotation route – annotation metadata in Spring would get built lazily, and as a result, at that point, it would already know about the validator and cache it. Future XML/annotation-based calls will be using the cached instance, and no errors will appear. Until this is fixed, I can suggest that you add some quick validation call that will take an annotation route as part of the initialization process. Maybe if you have a configuration for the validator – add some post-construct action that would request a validator and make a validation call. I previously did this manually using @Column(columnDefinition="enum(...)". Now Hibernate ignores my specified column definition for all enum columns. Since the new implementation always sorts the enum values alphapetically (see NamedEnumValueConverter in the 6.2 branch), this makes it impossible to use the intended ordinal-based sorting ( https://mariadb.com/kb/en/enum/#numeric-index ) with the optimized enum types. I haven’t checked the behaviour in the in-development 6.3 version, which changed a lot of the involved code.
