According 'Lucene in Action' smaller mergeFactor values are actually better for
searching. The smaller the mergeFactor the more files and the faster the search. Vice
versa for indexing. There you want to have less files.
This is pretty much how the hibernate search behaves right now - admittedly uncontrolled.
Really it is not so much a Hibernate Search question than a Lucene question. Maybe John
can help here.
