My first attempt to use BigDecimal ran into trouble trying to use the new @NumericField

I don't actually know how to create the test case. I've got the test case
sources, and can see many examples derived from SearchTestCase. What I want to do is
declare an entity class that uses the @NumericField annotation for a BigDecimal field.
What I normally do is have a hibernate.cfg.xml file with a <mapping
class="foo.bar.MyEntity"/> line that would introduce my entity to the
Session. How do I achieve this using the SearchTestCase framework?

An attempt at a test case, based on ImplicitIdTest.java. tgz file rooted at the root dir
of hibernate-search.git. It does not reproduce my problem. It fails with a
"org.hibernate.MappingException: Unknown entity: neek.EntityWithNumericField"
during the call to s.save(item), which I didn't think it would get to. Putting debug
in SearchTestCase.buildConfiguration() shows that getAnnotatedClasses() is returning
nee.EntityWithNumericField, so I'm stuck as to why the test case doesn't reproduce
my problem.

Unfortunately, there's no support for encoding BigDecimal as a numeric fields in
Lucene. Allowed types as int, long, float and double, and any other types than can be
represented as one of those (Date as milliseconds, for example). I'll update the docs
and work on the error message

Thanks for looking into it. This sounds a bit crazy, because what I've read recently
states that BigDecimal is the best way to represent financial data in a Java application.
It seems to be, on the surface, fairly trivial to bridge a BigDecimal field to a string
representation, for storage in a Lucene index in a way that Lucene can treat as a
@NumericField, and store in a Trie structure, with all the speed optimisations that come
with that special handling. Surely this is worth pursuing?
If you are certain we have no way of doing this, please advise in your doc update how one
should encode financial data using Hibernate Search. I feel a lot of users will come to
this situation, as I have, wanting to use BigDecimal as their Entity attribute types, and
wanting the Trie optimisations provided by @NumericField, needing a good solution.
From my point of view, the NumericField javadoc at
http://lucene.apache.org/java/3_0_3/api/core/org/apache/lucene/document/N...
states that int, long, float and double are directly supported, so couldn't we provide
a solution that turns a BigDecimal into a long representation by multiplying by its scale,
such that 12.34 is stored in lucene as 1234?

if you think it's acceptable to "approximate" a BigDecimal into another type
then maybe we could experiment with a kind of TwoWayFieldBridge geared to numbers.
Still, it's going to loose some precision, so maybe you would be fine using a long as
well?
you could workaround this by adding a new getter method, annotate it with @Transient and
@Numeric, and do the conversion to Long in the getter reading the BigDecimal field. Ok,
maybe not a totally clean solution, but let me know how it works for you.
You could also explore contributing the missing support to Lucene; I'm not sure how
easy it would be to implement proper sorting, considering that BigDecimal encodes the
number in exponential format.

BigDecimals can be quite a large number, making it impossible to fit into a long or a
double. But when working with financial values, I think a long could be a good compromise.
Just need to take care of the precision: one might express the financial value as 2.7677
an thus it becomes a long 27677. Do you think it makes sense to have an explicit Money
Type in Hibernate Search, who'd take care of handling the precision, conversion and
handling it as a NumericField in Lucene?

My first attempt to use BigDecimal ran into trouble trying to use the new @NumericField
annotation. The SessionFactory fails to create an instance of the session. The code:

G Fernandes: I don't know if it makes sense to invent a new Money Type. I did not
fully understand Sanne's suggestion to use @Transient and @Numeric (did you mean
@NumericField?). It sounds as if the advice is to store a long representation like 1234
in Lucene, and convert it to a BigDecimal("12.34") when reading it into my
Entity attribute. This sounds like a sensible way to go, and avoids inventing a new Money
Type (which may be an overly complicated solution). I will have to experiment for a
while. This sounds a lot like a Bridge, however I don't know how to implement a
TwoWay Bridge to map a BigDecimal into a string (?) representation in Lucene and still get
the Trie storage optimisations that come with @NumericField.
An example from you guys would be much appreciated.
If you guys come up with more solid solutions with your greater experience of the problem
domain, please do contribute here. I feel there is something lacking, either in
documentation or implementation, in trying to solve this problem. One thing is for sure,
I have to stop using 'double' to store and calculate my financial data :)

Here's a way to achieve that. Suppose an entity with a BigDecimal, you could use a
bridge to do the conversion to long:

Thank you.. that's exactly the kind of guidance I need. So we can combine
@NumericField and BigDecimal, if we provide a specific @FieldBridge. I know the original
exception message hinted at that ("Unable to guess FieldBridge for val"), but as
the Hibernate docs said that BigDecimal was supported, I presumed something more serious
was going wrong.
I take your point about having to multiply by 100. For now, all my search logic is
encapsulated within a helper class in my app, so it's trivial to hide such details
from the rest of my app. It would still be nice to have some dedicated support, either as
direct BigDecimal support, or via an explicit Money Type hinted at earlier.

BigDecimal in conjunction with @Field is supported "directly" as the docs say
because Hibernate Search internally applies a built-in bridge called BigDecimalBridge that
converts it to string, so no trieFields will be created in the index.
Regarding supporting directly BigDecimal with @NumericField, we're back to the initial
limitation of Lucene, no support for encoding BigDecimal as a trie structure.
Please be aware that the proposed solution with a bridge may potentially cause loss of
precision because of the narrowing from BigDecimal to long as described

This is my first JIRA so please help me assigns its Component above correctly.
My first attempt to use BigDecimal ran into trouble trying to use the new @NumericField
annotation. The SessionFactory fails to create an instance of the session. The code:

@Field(name="val", index=Index.UN_TOKENIZED, store=Store.YES)
@NumericField
private BigDecimal val;

Results in the exception:
