I'm writing a multi-language application and I have choose to use Hibernate Search.
But it looks like Hibernate Search have some limitations in multi-language applications.
I need to use the SnowballAnalyzer and create the instance at runtime because I only know

I have attached a diff.txt file and also uploaded a new version of the Flyer.java (using
annotation for the analyzer method).
Yes, maybe the solution have some limitations, like JMS support and you need to use
@Transient for the analyzer factory method,
but for me (and maybe for others :-)) it would be an additional improvement to Hibernate
Search if Hibernate Search could handle this issue.

Okay, I have changed the implementation to support JMS (I think so - I'm not a JMS guy
:-)).
I have added a new class to the Hibernate Search code -
org.hibernate.search.EntityInstanceAnalyzer (yes, I know its a bad name).
I have also added a new diff file, diff-jms.txt.
I know it's not the most elegant solution (it should work just fine), but maybe it can
give you some inspiration :-)

Why would you recommend to have factories in an entity?
I would love to see an annotation like @Language that identifies
the language for an entity, then user should plug it's own factory,
having an interface like
"Analyzer getAnalyzer(Object languageIdentifier)"
where the Object type is whatever type the @Language methods
return.
I think that separating the factory could give you more flexibility
and enable some good performance, initializing costly resources.
Also I think you'll probably want a single language-ecoding convention
across an application, not multiple.

Yes, maybe above solution is ok !?
Please have in mind that Analyzers not is serializable and not always thread-safe, e.g.
stemmers are not thread-safe!
And the Entity instance is not known to the LuceneWorker and therefore you can't get
an Analyzer from the Entity Instance.
BTW: I have only looked at the Hibernate Search code for a short time - I'm a
Hibernate Search novice and maybe I have overlooked something :-)

We looked at your solution but that's fairly intrusive.
Here is what I would propose, let me know if it fills your needs.
HSearch now provides a way to declare analyzer definitions by name. Would it be OK to
declare all needed analyzers upfront (in your case one per language).
Then the entity could have a method rendering the analyzer name
@Analyzer(impl=EntitySensitiveAnalyzer.class) //something might be enhanced here
public class Book {
private String description;
@AnalyzerDiscriminator(MyDiscriminatorImpl.class) //default to passthrough
discriminator //annotation can be set at the class level too

I'm writing a multi-language application and I have choose to use Hibernate Search.
But it looks like Hibernate Search have some limitations in multi-language applications.
I need to use the SnowballAnalyzer and create the instance at runtime because I only know
the language at runtime.
It really looks like Hibernate Search don't support runtime created analyzers for
entity instances.
I have extended Hibernate Search to support the above issue - maybe you could include the
code in Hibernate Search or implement something similarly.

The stemmers are not thread safe but the analyzers are thread safe, because the
tokenStream() always creates new instances of the filters.

Another problem with the current Analyzer implementation seems that it recreates the
Analyzer over and over again.
When the cost of constructing your Analyzer (like a synonym list in my case) is rather
high this leads to Hibernate Search being unacceptably slow.
This solution should help with that. Of course other solutions like caching could also
work (and might be simpler).

Hi, I just would like to revive this thread before implementing a particular solution.
I agree with Emmanuel that the original patch feels too intrusive. On the other hand I am
not sure whether the proposed AnalyzerDiscriminator solve the problem in a general case.
For me the most compelling reason for passing dynamic information into the Analyzer is the
multi-language application as discussed in this issue. The proposed AnalyzerDiscriminator
solution assumes that the language parameter is part of the the entity to be indexed, but
I am wondering if this not too limiting. Maybe the language is given by a user preference
or you could imagine an application where the same application is used to serve different
countries and the language is determined by the host (myapp.de vs. myapp.se vs. myapp.com)
which is used to access the application.
Any thoughts?

Well, it's really a matter of taste :-) I don't think it's too intrusive
(hibernate-search-v2.zip), and my problem is solved with the attached patch. At the moment
I'm using a custom build of Hibernate Search and the patch,
and it works fine.

Yes, it's too restrictive (if I understand the AnalyzerDiscriminator solution
correctly).
In the application I'm developing, the language is determine by the LocaleSelector
(i.e. html request header: Accept-Language (browser language settings)) or by some user
preferences saved in the database.
And the application supports a lot of languages.

I'm writing a multi-language application and I have choose to use Hibernate Search.
But it looks like Hibernate Search have some limitations in multi-language applications.
I need to use the SnowballAnalyzer and create the instance at runtime because I only know
the language at runtime.
It really looks like Hibernate Search don't support runtime created analyzers for
entity instances.
I have extended Hibernate Search to support the above issue - maybe you could include the
code in Hibernate Search or implement something similarly.
I really need this feature/improvement :-)

I can't really imagine an entity needing indexing (and thus having
"language" oriented content) but without any link to the language.
If I had only one language in my app, I wouldn't need it anyway. If I am serving
different languages I certainly want to keep track in my DB the associated language of
anything.
This is a design personal opinion of course, but could you really bring a use case were
you need multilanguage and don't want to link the entity to a specific language(s)?

I had in fact once the case where the language was not required as part of the entity. It
was a similar use case Kenneth is describing.That said, I guess I could have added the
language property to the main entity.

In my case the language is part of the Flyer (Flyer.java) entity, when the user choose to
create a Flyer. And in this case the Flyer entity needs to be indexing using the
SnowballAnalyzer and the language from the language entity property.

My question is then, should this dynamic analyzer override field level analyzers?
I guess no, it would only override the entity level analyzer. The problem then is that one
cannot refine the analyzer per field in a dynamic way, unless we pass the field name tot
he discriminator interface.

referencing an analyzer def is the right approach (string are serialiable and points to an
already initialized analyzer).

As Emmanuel says in the previous comment, the entity value is not really required in
getAnanyzerDefinitionName(). However, one could also argue that the value is not required.
Instead only the object is passed. In this case @AnalyzerDiscriminator would become a
class level annotation which seems more natural. Of course it binds the Discriminator
implementations more to the entities since once will have to probably cast the entity
object in order to eg extract the language parameter.
If we go with @AnalyzerDiscriminator as a field/property annotation, would we throw an
exception in case there are more than two @AnalyzerDiscriminator annotations used?
Any thoughts?

I have a first cut of the proposed solution. It works, but still feels quite shaky. For
example, how should @AnalyzerDiscriminator work in connection with @IndexedEmbedded?
Specifically, how do we cope with the fact that the field names passed to the
discriminator might contain a prefix. Is this something we just leave up to the
implementation?
I am not happy to commit the changes yet. Instead I attached a patch (HSEARCH-221.patch)
which applies on the current trunk. Happy to get some feedback.

I'm writing a multi-language application and I have choose to use Hibernate Search.
But it looks like Hibernate Search have some limitations in multi-language applications.
I need to use the SnowballAnalyzer and create the instance at runtime because I only know
the language at runtime.
It really looks like Hibernate Search don't support runtime created analyzers for
entity instances.
I have extended Hibernate Search to support the above issue - maybe you could include the
code in Hibernate Search or implement something similarly.
