Steve, what I didn't mention in the description of the issue is that it occurs with
the MySQL XA driver. I believe that the XA driver calls BlobProxy.getBytes(), which leads
to the exception.

More what I mean is that if the driver properly implements JDBC 4, then Hibernate
delegates creation of Blobs to it. As is, what is happening is that we are having a
Hibernate-generated Blob Proxy in the way because we are not (for some reason) able to
delegate to the driver.
Anyway I am working on some changes which should allow this type of usage of the proxy.
However I'd for sure recommend using a driver that properly supports JDBC 4

Paul, like I said I cannot figure out this source navigator at all. So perhaps there is
another Connection implementation somewhere. Actually I think you can actually load a
JDBC 3 driver into JDK 6 so long as you do not try to use JDBC 4 features. Hibernate does
so via reflection at startup to see what the driver actually supports. Perhaps it is
seeing the driver does not and is simply reverting to JDBC 3 level support. There would
be a log message to this effect at startup.
