I've added a PR that just causes an early failure when Search.getQueryFactory is invoked. This is not a fix.

The only valid option for memory based eviction is LRU. However, the console allows the user to set any eviction strategy which results in error after server restart:
org.infinispan.commons.CacheConfigurationException: Eviction cannot use memory based approximation with LIRS
I suggest we select LRU strategy and disable the dropdown when memory is set as an eviction type.

thanks for the detailed description! I've blindly followed the steps to reproduce and tracked the issue down to https://github.com/anistor/infinispan/blob/7238ec5c60f2617b681f00db4822cb..., were 'queryEngine' is null, indicating that the QueryEngine component was never created and registered by query module's LifecycleManager (https://github.com/anistor/infinispan/blob/7238ec5c60f2617b681f00db4822cb...). This tells me that the infinispan-query module was not initialised.
And then it occurred to me that you are not actually using the wildfly modules and instead you just use a normal pom dependency so the infinispan-query jar and friends end up in the WEB-INF/lib of your war file, but that's not enough.
So the issue should be fixed by getting the 8.2.x infinispan modules for wildfly archive and unpacking it on top of modules/system/layers/base and then updating the module attribute of the cache element to point to "org.infinispan.query:ispn-8.2". In theory, at least. I've tried that and got some strange classloading problems. Investigating now...

I understand the need to expose these. It would be great If I could take a look at your custom ProtoStreamMarshaller, maybe on github somewhere?. I suspect your needs are very similar to OGM. They also need protostream to support dynamic objects.
