The origin of the problem appears to be a missing member initailization of the bag member in the PersistentBag(SessionImplementor session) constructor. I don't know why this constructor is called rather than the other one that initializes the bag, and I haven't been able to reproduce the issue while running hibernate locally. Initializing the member seems to resolve my issue, although I can't tell if this has cascading effects on other parts.
