please consider adding some meaningful suffix such as
|afk
or
_away
to your IRC nick whenever you do not work so that others have a chance
to estimate if it is worth asking you anything at the given time.

Hi,
What's wrong with the IRC's builtin away-message and idle times that are
designed just for that?
eg. my status from Freenode:

: idle : 0 hours 20 mins 41 secs (signon: Thu Jan 29 20:10:39 2015)
You can see other user's info with /whois (use /whois nick nick to get
more complex info from linked server, though some clients default to this).
