I have been working on a github repo [1] for a Spring Boot example, which uses the new
OpenTracing Java Agent [2] with Hawkular APM.
Currently this is located in my own github account - but will soon be referenced from the
OpenTracing JavaAgent project as an example of how to use the agent with an OpenTracing
compliant tracer.
Therefore was wondering if it would be better for this example repo to be located under
the Hawkular org?

You should put it under some kind of "examples" folder in your APM repo.
I do the same thing with the several HOSA examples:

We already have an examples folder, so have used that approach in the past. However for
someone just looking to try out the OpenTracing javaagent with a tracing solution, it
seems a big overhead to clone the complete source for the Hawkular APM project, given that
it is not actually necessary/built before using the example.
As the example is using Hawkular APM as a ready built service (via docker), it seems
better if the example repo was small and independent of the Hawkular APM repo.
Maybe a hawkular-apm-examples repo? with a collection of such examples, and similarly
hawkular-services-examples repo?

I see those examples as OpenTracing examples, not APM. Hawkular APM is
there "just" to supply a dependency (the server), but the showcase is
around OpenTracing. As such, I'd name it as "opentracing-showcase", or
"opentracing-examples".
