A quick hack is to do port forwarding via SSH, e.g:
ssh -L 8080 localhost:8080 user@host
If you're connected via ssh, accessing your http://localhost:8080
connect to the remote server as if it was locally, and AFAIK localhost
doesn't require https.
After login in, you can change the realm settings to not require https
for external connections.
