Agent security

We currently are currently doing both push (inventory) and pull (metrics).
Which means we are going to have to deal configuring things on both ends,
and handling security here might get interesting.
For push, we need to pass to the agent:
- the url for Hawkular Services
- the username & password
- the CA certificate (optional; if Hawkular Services is using tls with
untrusted certificates)
And we need to make sure that Hawkular Services is signed with a
certificate valid for its hostname and make sure its easy to export the CA
certificate so that its easy to pass on to the agents.
For pull, this might get a bit tricky.
To access a pod's metric endpoint we will need to do so using its ip
address, and to do this properly the certificate used for the metric
endpoint must be valid for that ip address. Since the ip address of a pod
is not known before a pod is created, this means we need something to
dynamically generate a certificate for us which we fetch at startup. This
also means we cannot have a common secret containing the certificate that
can be shared across replica sets.
To do this properly with pods may require a lot of extra effort. With
'pets' its a lot easier.
Even if we have properly signed certificates, there is also a question of
how we get the CA for those certificates into Prometheus.
Do we really need to have p8s trust the certificate for the endpoint which
is being exposed? Or could we configure p8s to trust any certificate
without validating it first? There is no extra verification if someone
decides to use a non-https endpoint for instance.
I see a few options here, but I might be missing other options as well:
1) by default we check for certificate validation, but we allow an override
to disable it. If someone really wants to use certificate validation with
pods, then they can figure out on their how to get the right certificates
into the pod to be used by the agent.
2) we provide some service which when an agent registers with inventory, we
generate a certificate and key they can use (signed by our own CA). The
metrics endpoint then uses this certificate.
3) we do something like not expose an http endpoint at the agent, but
tunnel this to Hawkular Services. P8s could then read the metric endpoints
directly from Hawkular Services.

jmx exporter - com.sun classes used

This Prometheus HTTPServer class is what jmx exporter uses for its metrics endpoint - see:

Since it uses com.sun.net.httpserver classes under the covers, I'll assume this rules out support for, say, IBM's JVM (does IBM's JRE implement these?). I think this is available on OpenJDK but didn't check to make 100% sure.

Hawkular Inventory v4 in ManageIQ

Current master branch of Hawkular-Services already integrates our new
inventory version.
There were changes on the provider code to use a new hawkular gem (not yet
released) and changes on the manageiq core are to bump the gem version
(currently using master) and to update the live metrics mapping.
Here are some details to demo it:
I’m attaching a docker-compose.yml (thanks Edgar) to make it easier to test.
1) You should have ManageIQ dependencies already installed, you can follow
this getting started [1] right before “Cloning and configuring the
application”
2) Clonning the updated repositories (currently my forks [2, 3])

major progress to report - prometheus-hawkular integration is working

The team can report a pretty good milestone as of today. We have Prometheus linked with Hawkular in a nice way. Not fully integrated (we don't have, say, a single image with everything) but works pretty good for now.
Here's some details on how to demo this (you should have hawkular-services repo git cloned locally and the hawkular-1275 branch checked out):
1) Build hawkular-services dist with -Pdev - we will run it from the target/ directory in the next step:
mvn clean install -Pdev
2) Run Hawkular-Services:
hawkular-services/dist/target/hawkular-services-dist-*/bin/standalone.sh -b 0.0.0.0
3) Run Prometheus configured to scan our hawkular metrics endpoints - we have a test script that runs a pre-configured Prometheus in a docker container:

OK, that's it. You are ready to see inventory and metrics.
At this point your server is running and an agent is running with it. We have an agent attached to h-services so the agent can monitor the server.
The agent itself has a prometheus metrics endpoint exposed via built-in jmx exporter. You can see the raw data from the agent if you point your browser to http://localhost:9779/metrics.
After you give it some time, the agent will report all inventory up to the server. The server will also create a Prometheus scrape configuration file to tell Prometheus where the agent's metrics endpoint is. The pre-configured Prometheus discovers any new scrape configuration files as new agents come online. So without doing anything manually, Prometheus will immediately start collecting metrics data from agents as they come online.
You can see the inventory in our little inventory UI - point your browser to http://localhost:8080/hawkular/inventory/ui and look at the tree of resources.
Now for the Prometheus integration - click on a resource in the inventory UI's left-hand tree, pick a resource that has metrics (say, "[WildFly Server] Local"). On the right side, you'll see the default base URL for prometheus listed as "http://localhost:9090" in a text field - you can leave that as-is or edit it if you need to. But this is referring to the Prometheus you started in step 3 above. Now drop down the Metrics menu and pick a metric. The browser opens a tab and takes you to the metric graph in Prometheus. You should see data.
What does all of this get you? Well, normally Prometheus data isn't organized by associated resources - its just a long list of labeled metrics that you have to make sense out of in order to organize the metrics yourself. Hawkular gives you a nice inventory view (your hierarchy of resources) that does this organization of Prometheus metrics for you. So while Prometheus gives you metric data and pretty graphs, Hawkular "organizes" those metrics by grouping them with their associated resources in hierarchical inventory view.

possible bug in inventory server

This agent itest error on travis just happened to me locally. After looking at it, I think it is a bug in inventory REST server.
I'll try to explain as briefly as I can.
In this particular itest [B] it creates datasources in WildFly, checks that they exist in h-inventory, removes those datasources from WildFly, and checks that they no longer exist in h-inventory.
For some reason, after it is removed from WildFly and inventory, a REST query to inventory says it is still there (even though a previous, different, query said it was not there).
Here's what I see:
1. "testXaDs" is an XA datasource that is created in Wildfly and the agent stored it in inventory. A "get all resources" inventory REST query "hawkular/inventory/resources?feedId=itest-rest-feed" shows it exists in inventory:

2. The test then removes that datasource from WildFly (the itest asserts via a DMR query that it is gone from WildFly). Then, making that same inventory REST query "hawkular/inventory/resources?feedId=itest-rest-feed" that "testXaDs" is not in the list - it is gone from inventory based on that "get all resources" query. This is good and expected. We see the datasource successfully removed from inventory after WildFly deleted it.
3. But then the itest queries inventory using a different REST URL (filtered on type ID): "/hawkular/inventory/resources?feedId=itest-rest-feed&typeId=XA%20Datasource" and this time I GET RESULTS back saying that "testXaDs" resource is still there! Even though the "get all resources" query said it was not there. This is the call here [C] which ends up at this inventory REST request [D].
Who wants to investigate the inventory service to see if I'm right that there is a bug here? If there is no bug in inventory, the only other option is it's a bug in the itest code, but I checked and everything looks good to me there. I can't see a problem in the itest code. And the fact this is intermittent (passes sometimes, fails sometimes) tells me there is something sinister going on in the inventory server (i.e. if it is a problem in the test code, you would think it would always fail).

[A] Here's the full output from the test along with the itest assertion error stack trace. There is a lot of junk, but in short, it shows the XA datasource called "testXaDs" is in inventory, then the test deletes it, we see "testXaDs" is no longer in inventory (that print out of the inventory list comes from query results of that "get all resources" REST query), but a query to inventory REST API filtering on typeId says it is still there. Doesn't happen all the time, happens half the time in travis and just happened locally to me.
