I have the feeling this is a bad thing. We want JBT to remain independent from JBDS, so it shouldn't hold JBDS-specific properties. And where are those properties used? IMO, the version of JBT or JBDS shouldn't be something set at build-time, but more something that we can introspect at runtime from some bundle versions. Isn't it what the properties loader already do?

As illustrated in JBIDE-18806 our current setup of how ide.properties and project versioning are not working or at least we seem to not get it updated right.
Current workaround applied is that parent pom now again defines the global version even though this is not reliable at all since not all plugins will be rebuilt. (see JBIDE-13452 for earlier attempts on this)
Opening this jira to make sure we walkthrough and write down which values should be in ide.properties and what level (4.2.0.CR1, 4.2.0 or 4.2. etc), when they get updated (hopefully rarely) and how to avoid parent pom from always having to respin because of a maintanence release.

[~nickboldt] When can we have the jre paths added to parent pom? The default surefire timeout already exists in parent. I would like to actually have my i-test branch not simply be a dead-end for the next 2 months.

The underlying issue is not fixed, the current fix here is purely hiding the bug by fixing the related bug about the values in ide.properties not being correct. I've cloned to JBIDE-18819 to get this fixed completely.
About the hardcoded values in parent pom those values does matter without an actual rebuild of the related plugins and we are working towards trying to avoid rebuilds thus putting the values. This was done in https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBIDE-13452.

Depends on what we mean for "more gracefully":
Adding a line in the log would be easy
Showing the page with no site loaded anyway might work (or fail) depending on some implementation details.
Showing a specific new thing on that page for that case may be a bit too much for the branch, especially with the low criticity of this issue for real-life usage (with a correct ide-config.properties and version correctly set).

JBIDE-18806 currently workaround this issue by setting values that makes this issue show up.
The code in central should not be loading this content during the construction of the tab so it results in the tab being completely gone just because there is an error/bug in the incoming data.
We should make it fail more gracefully. Is there an easy fix for this ?

With latest CI build (in http://www.qa.jboss.com/binaries/RHDS/builds/staging/devstudio.product_8.... ), Central editor seems to miss the "Software/Updates" tab.
