> Should we rename the default perspective that opens OOTB in devstudio so it's not the "JBoss Perspective? Reason I ask is that it's the first word you see in the titlebar when you fire up DS for the first time:

[JBoss JIRA] (JBDS-3872) rename JBoss perspective?
by Todd Mancini (JIRA)
Todd Mancini commented on JBDS-3872:
------------------------------------
a) helpful info -- thx.
b) Understood. I'm growing less concerned about it causing confusion worth fixing. The alternative would be something like "Red Hat - Red Hat Central - Red Hat Developer Studio" which really doesn't strike me as any better. ('Oh, so this is Red Hat? Why not tell me that one more time...')
c) I was just making something up off the top of my head. I should have said 'foo' rather than .NET.
d) No, I really mean no JBT. Maybe the user just wants container tools. Or maybe we have other tools in the future. Any combination of tools (within reason) should be possible. This is a forward-looking statement, and I agree doesn't not apply well with the current set of features.
d2) Not sure what would be good to move the Central. I think I'd need to review a catalog of existing features. Not a priority right now.

[JBoss JIRA] (JBDS-3872) rename JBoss perspective?
by Nick Boldt (JIRA)

Four things to clarify:
a) we only have the one JBoss perspective right now; the notion of adding more was a hypothetical. "Last installed wins" only applies if we start adding more perspectives.
b) as in this screenshot [ [^icon-titlebar-jbds10.png] ] the perspective name is shown in the title bar BEFORE the open view/editor, and BEFORE the product name. That's just the way Eclipse works. But the result is that on startup, it could appear to the untrained eye like you're running something called "JBoss - Red Hat Central - Red Hat Developer Studio." So I opened this JIRA to ask the question if we need to avoid that because... Branding Rules.
c) .Net/C# development in Eclipse? Possible: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6444625/c-sharp-plugin-for-eclipse but some investment would be needed as it appears that project hasn't been touched in a couple years, based on its tracker, and hasn't had a new release since 2010.
d) "it's entirely possible that a user will install DS without JBoss tools." I presume by this you mean some *subset* of JBoss Tools, not the whole thing; if you omit all of JBT from a DS install, you get a branded product build on top of Eclipse, and *very* little else.
Which pieces of JBT would you see as something a user might want to omit from a default DS install? Over the years we've moved things out of the default install and into Central so they'd still be available but not installed OOTB. Should we move more things for DS 10?

[JBoss JIRA] (JBDS-3872) rename JBoss perspective?
by Todd Mancini (JIRA)
Todd Mancini commented on JBDS-3872:
------------------------------------
Red Hat Developer Studio is a product which captures all current and many future development scenarios. That does not mean that everything suddenly has to be renamed. For example, if the user elects to include the JBoss tools in their installation (they really don't have a choice today anyway), then it's fine for them to get a perspective with 'JBoss' in the name. If the user installs our container tooling, then, sure, they may also get a 'Red Hat Container Tools' perspective (I'm just making up names). Later, if we had .NET tools, maybe their would be a '.NET' perspective. But no perspective needs to be named "Red Hat Developer Studio" or anything along those lines; as long as the perspective name makes it reasonably easy for someone to know what it is, that's good. [Short answer: no need to rename the current JBoss perspective. It's name seems appropriate to me.]
Nick says that whatever perspective is installed last becomes the default. Okay, I guess that's fine for now. Note that if we have an installer which gives the user fine-grained choices, it's entirely possible that a user will install DS without JBoss tools. Or without container tools. Or without [pick your favorite tool here]. Similarly, they could choose any combination of the available tools and capabilities. So it might be nice to think about a saner approach to the 'default perspective', but 'last installed wins' works for me, for now.
