And yes I've used hibernate, drools, jbpm and almost every other major tech we got outside of a web app, i.e. commandline or fat clients - but the common denominator were Java/JEE. Java is a bit too generic so JavaEE sounded pretty god to me. Note, jbpm is not tied to SOA either - its used as pageflow engine in Seam.
