Tom, as you said "a scrollable column on the left (for source) and a scrollable
column on the right (for target), separated by a thin region in the middle that is just
part of the general background canvas on which the two scrollable regions sit" , I
think it looks like the old smooks editor , right ?
If so , I can't agree with you , because the old smooks design style was failed proved
by history.

For large templating target models, it will be very difficult for the user to map onto
the model without the ability to scroll the target model in the window while maintaining
the position of the source in the view window.
