Found it !
Adding the following line of code in JBossBirtServlet corrects it :
task.getAppContext().put(EngineConstants.APPCONTEXT_BIRT_VIEWER_HTTPSERVET_REQUEST, req);
birt : reportContext.getHttpServletRequest() returns null
