ok - this was a bug introduced by the fix for getting the formatting.
the formatter was running before we refreshed eclipse knowledge about the generated files
so it was actually formatting the old files not the new ones....
I moved refreshing up before the formatting and now it works for me.

OK, the real problem with the code formatting turned out to be when you re-generate over
the top of existing generated classes.
If you delete the existing classes first, the formatter *does* run.
