I have a properties file encoded in UTF-8 containing some properties with danish
characters in the value part.
If I open it with my "old" Eclipse 3.3.1 it's ok, even when using JBoss
Tools 2.1.2.GA (JBoss Tools Properties File Editor).
If I use JBDS 1.1.0.GA and open it with the eclipse build-in properties file editor
it's also fine!
BUT if I use JBDS 1.1.0.GA and open it with the JBoss Tools 2.1.2.GA (JBoss Tools
Properties File Editor), it messes up the file!
Test scenario:

1. Create a UTF-8 encoded file containing the danish letter
http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/00e6/index.htm.
2. Open it in JBDS 1.1.0.GA with the eclipse build-in properties file editor. keep it
open.. see that the danish character is displayed ok.. it should be..
3. Keep the previous editor open, and open the same file with the JBoss Tools 2.1.2.GA
(JBoss Tools Properties File Editor)
4. Note how the previous build-in properties file editors version of the file gets marked

For reading and saving .properties file I use java.util.Properties. It always uses
encoding 8859_1, I cannot make it work with locale set in Eclipse. To fix the issue, I
need to make a copy of java.util. Properties and modify it to work with custom encoding.
Could you explain please how that can be of use? I thought that for run-time, safe format
of .properties files is ASCII + \uNNNN symbols.

I have a properties file encoded in UTF-8 containing some properties with danish
characters in the value part.
If I open it with my "old" Eclipse 3.3.1 it's ok, even when using JBoss
Tools 2.1.2.GA (JBoss Tools Properties File Editor).
If I use JBDS 1.1.0.GA and open it with the eclipse build-in properties file editor
it's also fine!
BUT if I use JBDS 1.1.0.GA and open it with the JBoss Tools 2.1.2.GA (JBoss Tools
Properties File Editor), it messes up the file!

java.util.Properties was extended by EncodedProperties, which differs as follows:
1) when reading from input stream, it creates String with given encoding;
2) inner class LineReader handles this encoded string rather than bytes;
3) when storing to OutputStream, new OutputStreamWriter is created with given encoding.
Unfortunately, it was necessary to copy/past some methods (loadConvert, saveConvert, etc);
which would not need any modifications, and could be just invoked had they not been
private in java.util.Properties.
To load properties, encoding is taken from IFile as getCharset().

hmm....we can't just copy/paste code from sun's classes.
Isn't there any other way of fixing this ? i.e. simply do the edits on the text file
and save it through eclipses normal document/editor saving facilities ?

JBoss Tools Property Files Editor has ui page, which allows to view and edit user-friendly
characters rather than \uNNNN sequences. The conversion between \uNNNN and characters is
done by loadConvert, saveConvert in java.util.Properties. In principle, these methods are
trivial (just several lines of code), and why cannot we re-implement them if we need it
for supporting encoded .properties files? If sun had a private method solving problem x *
x + a * x = b, could it mean that we may not write a method solving it?

Slava, You cannot *copy* Sun licensed/GPL licensed code into our code base if it is more
than a few trivial lines - that is correct.
But I still do not understand why we need to use java.util.Properties to save these files
when eclipse has a perfectly well working save functionallity ?

Well, I was simplifying the matter too much, when I wrote that we use java.util.Properties
do load and save *files*. Actually, we use it to convert data between text and ui pages.
Here is the process:
1) Eclipse reads file to string.
2) Input stream reading that string is passed to java.util.Properties (now to
EncodedProperties).
3) User friendly pairs name/value are passed to ui page, where user can view and edit them
without knowledge about \uNNNN sequences.
4) Modified pairs name/value are passed to java.util.Properties (now to EncodedProperties)
to store them into string that uses \uNNNN sequences whenever needed.
5) String is stored to file by Eclipse.
The critical stage is (2) - here java.util.Properties reads bytes from input stream and
converts them to chars using 8859_1, which we need to replace with custom encoding.
