The above error was caused by the following entry in eclipse.ini:

-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.DefaultType=mozilla
{code}
This flag is a workaround so that you can use Eclipse while you have google
hangout/bluejeans installed and use GTK2. This combination crashes Eclipse if you dont
have the above setting and is thus - i guess - widely used while GTK3 is not stable.
