Once JBDS SOA Tooling plugins are released, users will be able to get them directly from
the new JBoss Central view inside JBDS.
Here's a sneak peak of how that will look:

Basically, users need only browse the list of available connectors (a connector is a
collection of features/plugins to be installed via Central in a single operation), select
them, agree to the license terms, and then install them, restarting JBDS when prompted.
There is also currently a staging site for the 5.0.0.M5 bits, which can be used to test
the plugins as installed into Eclipse or JBDS the old way (via Help > Install new
software > https://devstudio.jboss.com/updates/5.0/staging/soa-tooling/). The process
is similar to that stated above, but the UI is a bit different.

I find it a little confusing-- is that dividing line after the first 2 items meant to
divide by 'Enterprise vs. Community' or 'Get the package vs. Ala-carte'?
Both seem to be true. The top 2 categories (SOA and BRMS) are our 'Enterprise'
offerings. The bottom categories are 'Community' or ambiguous.
But the top 2 could also be taken as aggregations, while the bottom ones are singletons
you can pick from....
I'd think this could be confusing. Could we have some description 'for Enterprise
users', 'for Community users', or something similar?

First on the JBDS SOA Update site above.
1. I don't think "SOA-P" means anything to customers. It's a very
internal term. Suggest simply "SOA" since we've done away with the old
collection named with "SOA"
2. The ModeShape tools go under JBoss Data Servcies rather than SOA
Second on the most recent screenshots above. They look good and are less confusing.
Couple points:
1. Do you think users get the difference between "Project Tooling" and
"Product Tooling". Assuming your eyes pick up the subtle wording, does that
carry significant meaning to users? Should it be "Community Project Tooling"
and "Product Tooling" or a similar distinction? Or maybe it's "JBoss
Tooling by Project" vs "JBoss Tools by Product"? Maybe splitting hairs a
bit.
2. Under Product we have two products SOA-P and BRMS. There are actually 3 products: SOA
Platform, Data Services Platform and BRMS. Rather than creating a new product category,
perhaps rename the "SOA-P Tooling" to "SOA and Data Services Tooling".
Since Data Services is a superset this makes more sense than breaking them out. Here the
Teiid and ModeShape tools would be under "SOA and Data Services Tooling" with
ESB, jBPM 3, BPEL, etc.

Do you think users get the difference between "Project

Well, if they install JBoss Tools, they'll see the SOA contributions to Central
labelled "Project Tooling". If they install JBDS, they'll see "Product
Tooling". It's unlikely they'll see both buckets in the same UI, since the
plan is to include only individual projects in JBT and the grouped product-like bundles in
JBDS.
There are actually 3 products
I'm good with relabelling the 2 categories in JBDS Central or adding a third,
massaging the contents of the categories, etc. It's a minimal amount of work to make
whatever changes you feel provide the best, clearest choices for customers. All I need is
that you all agree on what you want, and explicit instructions on what to change, eg.,
* [JBDS Updates] relabel "SOA-P Tooling" category to "SOA and Data Services
Tooling" (to match Central)
* [JBDS Central] relabel "SOA-P Tooling" category to "SOA and Data Services
Tooling" (to match update site)
* [JBDS Updates] move Modeshape into JBoss Data Services and also include in "SOA and
Data Services Tooling" category (to match Central)

okey so lets just reiterate what we agreed on (and which as I read it is the same thing
Ken J. says):
There should not be any mention of specific product platforms in the categories, since
product names changes, product content changes and users perception changes/are
different.
We do not have any mention of Project vs Product in marketing nor UI thus it is not really
useful for grouping either.
We do have a mention of JBoss Community when we talk about JBoss AS support and we do have
JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (fully spelt out) for the server adapter - but that
is the only difference.
Thus lets keep product/project and name mangling out of the categories and just leave them
to be names about what they are useful for, i.e. "SOA and Data services
tooling", "Business Rules" etc.
And I suggest we use the same exact categories/names in both JBT and JBDS since they are
meant to be the exact same groupings/content. Just that the number of plugins/features in
group might vary wether it is JBT or JBDS central showing it.
Modeshape is though one that "falls outside" since this is something useful for
anyone using JCR, such as portal, soa or even for non-app server users.
Ken's grouping of it is fine by me - its though problematic it is only built/released
when SOA product is doing builds.

Remember, there are TWO Central Discovery Plugins: one for JBT and a second for JBDS.
There are also TWO update sites behind those discovery plugins: JBT SOA (with things like
SwitchYard) and JBDS SOA (without incubating projects).
So... @Len, I'm assuming your comments refer only to the JBDS Central and JBDS SOA
Tooling Update Site, not the JBT ones.
Max, meanwhile, seems adamant that we NOT use product branding in JBT or JBDS, and that we
use the same categories in both JBT and JBDS... so we'll need a different approach
there, eg., that we use "Business Rules" instead of BRMS.

Len - BRMS is a product name - so no, that is not what it would be.
"Business Rules" was my suggestion for general category name for it.
Nick, and yes there are two one for JBT and JBDS and the suggestion is we use the same
category names to avoid having confusion.
About jbpm5 I think this issue has outgrown its ability to handle actual content
questions. Open a new for that and ask Doug to work on that ?

We need a README for installing the SOA-related plugins via JBoss Central - so
that we explicitly tell the SOA, BRMS, etc. users how to get their plugins
installed.
See also JBDS-2046, which tracks the UI in Central that users will see. Note too that
there will be an update site on devstudio.jboss.com from which users will get their bits
(via Central) and from which bits can be installed the old way too.
