There's a new PMD 4.0.3.v20140427-0831 release available on Sourceforge here:

[~ldimaggio] [~fbricon] If you have time, can you see if this new version fixes the above
issue? If so I can pull the update into Central. If not, we'll slip this out and wait
some more. :)

Installed PMD4 from here:

Then selected source code and executed Generate Abstract Syntax Tree
And hit this error:
net.sourceforge.pmd.lang.java.ast.ParseException: Can't use static imports when
running in JDK 1.4 mode!
