First, a couple dumb questions.
a) are you using the JDK or the JRE? You'll want the JDK.
b) If you update to the latest Oracle/Open JDK 1.7.0.x (or even better, use 1.8.0.x) does
the problem go away?

JBDS fails to start because of a missing symbol in the JVM shared library.
"The JVM shared library "/Library/Internet
Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/../lib/server/libjvm.dylib* does not
contain the JNI_CreateJavaVM symbol."
