I just got confirmation from John Graham that getting the properties like we do should
work....and my standalone tests seem to work fine so something else must be triggering
these issues.
From John:

the base DB properties, and you can see various things like driver class,
user name, password (of course, Derby embedded doesn't need a un and pw
value)."

I get empty string for HSQL driver class name in ds.xml making deployment fail
only way I could make it work was when using the generic driver's where I explicitly
sets a driver classname.
