when implementing JBIDE-14631 I had the needed infrastructure and this became a breeze.
Thus took it for Beta2:

It looks as if display names (longer description than shortnames) are not available for
application types currently (as you can see in the screenshot, they're not displayed
for the application type, they're only present for embedded cartridges). I currently
dont get these from the REST service.
