(5.4-SNAPSHOT) to the 5.3.x branch (which might not be recommended, as this is the product

If they are needed to support SOA-P/BRMS 5.3, then yes. The concern raised on the call
today was that Drools 5.4 won't support SOA-P/BRMS 5.3, and that everyone would be
more comfortable including something GA'd already (5.3.1) than something still under
