It would be nice when selecting for example an existing SOA-P install to have available in
the server view, a way to validate what I have selected is correct. For example I was
selecting /jboss-soa-p.4.3.0/jboss-as and it should have been /jboss-soa-p.4.3.0 instead.
It would be nice if some validation could be done and the next button would be greyed out
not active unless the expected correct path was selected. I am not sure if the path
should be /jboss-soa-p.4.3.0/jboss-as or /jboss-soa-p.4.3.0 but part of me thinks this
should be /jboss-soa-p.4.3.0/jboss-as and not the way it is today.

I assume you mean in the installer, right ?
Then the proper directory is actually jboss-soa-p.4.3 and not the as directory since it
will not just configure the AS bits but also other runtimes available in there.
i.e. drools, esb, jbpm, seam and eventually resteasy - the latter two actually existing
outside the jboss-as directory.

If that is the proper directory, then if I am selecting the wrong one I need to have an
error message letting me know what I have selected is not correct. OF course that fact
that customers can set -Djboss.something.server.url=some other path is also problematic
for this, as you can start up jboss without having the normal
jboss-eap-5.0/jboss-as/server/default, you do not need to boot using the previous
mentioned path, so maybe that is something you would ignore in the short term with this.

I just had an idea I wanted to share with you.
Would it be possible to perhaps place a note in the installer screen (thinking maybe in a
side column that could be labeled 'tips' or something) that mentions how to select
the correct path for the runtime instead of only an error message?
I was thinking that it is good to tell someone they have done something wrong, but we have
an opportunity here to give them the information before they make the mistake to begin
with, which might be another avenue to consider.

I see that I got it as Installer issue, but it seems to be relevant for JBossAS tools
also.
Below is what could be done within this issue.
In installer:
1. I can check parent folders to make sure that selected folder is not part of EAP/SOA-P
distribution and show request to adjust selected folder to EAP/SOAP
2. It is possible to add tray on the right side of dialog and show some documentation,
but it is Swing application, so I'll have to implement it from scratch.
In Eclipse:
1. Add validation for it in runtime wizard with documentation in doc tray on the right
side of dialog
2. Add global validation that would create global error/warning markers for workspace if
such problems are found for JBoss runtimes. Quick fix should be available for such
error/warning markers to remove adjust path to server root dir.
3. (that's just an idea) Add Error/Warning decoration to server items in Servers view
We can start form changes in installer.

JBDS should ask user If he wants to use parent directory with the comment displayed in
message box right now. Because JBDS is now forcing user to use parent directory but I can
imagine situation when user could want to use only jboss-as subdirectory of jboss eap
directory (use only as server from jboss eap bundle)
