Attempts to start other x applications, e.g. xclock fail with the same error msg "X connection to localhost:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)." I am connect to the Unix machine via Putty with X11 forwarding enabled. When I start an X-Server on my local Windows machine the problem does not occur and the application is running smooth.
