Maybe pass a list of fixedValues/selectedValues to rich:pickList? JSF SelectItem's method setNoSelectionOption(true) has functionality that goes into that direction, however this would mean this feature would only be available when passing List<Selectitem> into the pickList. It would probably be better to support it for any list.
