"State Flag" is rendered into each table cell of the column, followed by the respective text or image. It works, however, like this: {code} <rich:column> <f:facet name="header"><h:outputText>State Flag</h:outputText></f:facet> <h:graphicImage value="#{cap.stateFlag}"/> </rich:column> {code} So, either the documentation needs to be changed, or the rendering is buggy.
