When redeploying, webapp classloader isn't garbage collected, causing a
"java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space" after a few times.
I used a profiler ("yourkit") to see where the issue was and found these 3
classes:
- org.richfaces.model.selection.ClientSelection
- com.sun.faces.application.ConverterPropertyEditorFactory$DisposableClassLoader
- com.sun.faces.application.ConverterPropertyEditorBase
See attached screen shot for more details.
I don't know where the 2 com.sun.faces classes come from either, but at least
org.richfaces.model.selection.ClientSelection shouldn't be there.
I saw issue RF-1284 which appears to be very similar, only now this happens in a newer
version.

This is a screen shot from YourKit analyzer.
It shows the "remaining classes" of my WebappClassLoader, that cause the garbage
collection to fail for this class loader.

I stumbled upon this issue looking for a solution on a similar PermGen OutOfMemoryError
but on another Application Server: GlassFish.
org.richfaces.model.selection.ClientSelection was also listed in the classes left behind
after undeploying the application. I noticed it was also linked to
org.apache.commons.io.FileCleaner of which the API states that it can cause this problem:

In an environment with multiple class loaders (a servlet container, for example), you
should consider stopping the background thread if it is no longer needed. This is done by
invoking the method exitWhenFinished(), typically in
javax.servlet.ServletContextListener#contextDestroyed or similar.

we're not using apache.commons.io, so calling this will not help.
To summarize, somehow your

This should probably be removed before reloading the context, but how?
PropertyEditorManager has no methods for removing editors. I have the impression i
don't even want it to be registered in the first place, but i don't know who or

I was able to reproduce the error with a simple jsf project using the following versions:
myfaces 1.1.4
facelets 1.1.11
org.richfaces 3.3.1.GA
I'm running this code on a glassfish server version: Sun Java System Application
Server 9.1_02 (build b04-fcs)
After undeployment the classloaders can't be collected by gbc and like Geert stated
before this ClientSelection class is left.

Just for testing I removed the ClientSelection converter from the faces-config of the
richfaces-ui project and from that point undeploying went well. It also broke the
application so this is not a work around. Just to let you know this ClientSelection is
really causing the problem.
I have a similar issue with the org.apache.myfaces.fileupload.UploadedFile from
myfaces-extensions-1.0.9.jar. Both are converters that stay registered after undeploying.

java.beans.PropertyEditorManager keeps a strong reference to the registered classes. The
xbean PropertyEditor classes are loaded by the context class loader, (which is the webapp
class loader if running in Tomcat etc.). The class java.beans.PropertyEditorManager is
loaded by the bootstrap class loader. This means that there is a strong reference from the
bootstrap class loader to the webapp class loader, which means that the webapp class
loader cannot be unloaded, which means that the webapp is not garbage collected when it is
undeployed.
