deltaspike-cdictrl [1] contains an API for controlling CDI containers in SE, including
controlling the built-in contexts.
There are currently impls for
* openwebbeans standalone
* weld standalone
* openejb embedded (includes openwebbeans) if you like to start a almost fully blown EE
server in embedded mode.
We could also easily add jbossas7-embedded if some JBoss guys would like to contribute
this. Should be about 100 lines of code or so.

No, it's not part of the spec in CDI 1.1. We are looking at it for CDI 2.
Both Weld and OpenWebBeans support such a mode though (e.g. look for Weld SE).
