Hi all,
Tycho 0.19 was released recently and comes with a bunch of improvements,
some of them being highly interesting for our use-cases. The exhaustive
list is here: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Tycho/Release_Notes/0.19 .
We'd like to move JBoss Tools and JBoss Developer Studio builds on both
4.1.x and master branch to Tycho 0.19.0 ASAP.
However, this version contains various breaking changes. Some of them
might affect some modules. I've run tests on build-related modules and
some components, but not all. So please try the following on your
modules and report if you notice any issue, compared to current
behaviour of a simple /mvn clean verify/:
$ mvn clean verify -DtychoVersion=0.19.0

that you can now run unit tests against pre-installed eclipse ? (great for QE!)

This is the main one.
There are also some performance improvements that might make feedback a
little bit faster.

This is the main one.
Okey cool. Good to know.
There are also some performance improvements that might make feedback
a little bit faster.
I talked with the Tycho SAP guys at EclipseCon and the fun part was that
they had no idea what caused those performance improvements ;)
Best guess was that they did improve "is site uptodate" for some cases in p2,
but that didn't seem to explain all of it.
My test runs with tycho 0.19 at eclipsecon didn't show any performance improvements -
but
that was on a crappy network.

These are the numbers to beat - whole stack from top to bottom starting
from Base to Composite Install takes 5-6 hours:
https://jenkins.mw.lab.eng.bos.redhat.com/hudson/job/jbosstools-buildflow...
Then it's 30-90 mins for JBT, 60 mins for JBDS, and ~ 30 mins for the
Version Watch job.
If moving to Tycho 0.19 will chop anything out of that 7-9 hour process,
then that would be excellent. :)

most of that is not related to tycho. That is test run times and a lot aggregation.
The builds takes a few minutes for each component. I don't think you'll see it
make the tests runs faster.

Yup, I agree we won't see much
improvement as the Tycho build time is
very small compared to the test execution time. We might see some
improvements on aggregation and product materialization (which are
pure-Tycho/p2 mechanism).
