Kitchensink uses his own DS configuration, and it is enough to add proposed DB_CLOSE_ON_EXIT=FALSE to the connection url, in the file _/src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/kitchensink-quickstart-ds.xml_, in order to workaround the error.
